Common Aprs.fi App Problems and Troubleshooting Steps

Android, iOS, or macOS operating system users may encounter a problem where an app will display a black screen for a few seconds before crashing, with or without an error message. However, there are a few methods you can try to fix this issue:

  1. Sometimes, this problem may be caused by a temporary loading issue. To fix this, go to the recent applications menu on your phone, usually accessed by the first left button, and close the app that is experiencing the issue. Then, re-open the app.
  2. If that doesn't work, try doing a hard reboot of your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Android device by simultaneously pressing and holding the "Home" and "Power" buttons for up to 10 seconds, then release them and hold the "Power" button until the screen turns on. After that, try opening the app again.
  3. If none of the above solutions work, another option is to wait for the phone battery to drain and turn off automatically. After that, charge the phone and turn it on and try opening the app again.
  4. If the problem persists, you may need to uninstall and re-install the app. Re-installing the app will restore all settings.
  5. If the app still does not work, you can try installing older versions of the app.

Aprs.fi Developer Updates

Version 2.5.3 20 February 2024

β€’ Enabled new translation for Chinese - Traditional, and updated Romanian translation. Thank you, contributors! β€’ Custom notification sound for incoming messages. β€’ Updated aprs-deviceid database for local device identification for packets received from a TNC, including some new radios. β€’ Some internal enhancements which should not, in theory, have any visible side effects..

Version 2.5.0 09 January 2024

β€’ Added a search feature for message threads. Allows searching by callsign and contents of the latest message. β€’ Use the Edit mode to select multiple message threads, and then use the Trash can button to delete them all. Slide two fingers to quickly select a range of threads. β€’ In Edit Mode, you can also use Search to find all "HOTG" APRS Thursday threads, use the Select All button to select all found threads, and then delete them with the Trash can button. β€’ The station information view broke on iPads in 2.4.2 - fixed it!.

Version 2.4.1 08 February 2023

β€’ Login status is refreshed more often - email validation status should be updated quicker after clicking that weird link in your email. β€’ Fixed a couple of rare crashes which a few users experienced. β€’ Show a scale view on the map. β€’ Improve timing of some scheduled events like beaconing. β€’ Updates to frameworks, rebuilt for iOS 16..

Version 2.4.0 14 August 2022

β€’ Favourite stations can be starred in the station details view, after which they will appear in the Favourites list in the search view. They'll also magically synchronise with multiple devices, as well as the aprs.fi web site - tap the "star" button on the right edge of the map view! When using two devices at the same time, it may take a short while for the synchronisation to happen both ways. β€’ The map should now restore to the previous view more reliably. There was a bug where the last view (visible area & map type) were sometimes not stored, if you visited the app and only viewed non-map views, and the app was terminated by iOS in the background. β€’ Localisation updates! Plenty of new translations from many contributors. Thank you!.

Version 2.3.2 17 November 2021

β€’ Graphs refresh automatically every 30 seconds, and when reopening the app β€’ Localisation updates: Catalan. Thank you, it is 100% complete! β€’ Improved iOS 15 support β€’ Minimum supported iOS version is now 12.4 β€’ Fixes for messaging functionality on iOS 12 and small displays β€’ Updated APRS device model identification database β€’ Fixed a crash when trying to open message details view (long press a Message, select Details) β€’ A rather big bunch of under-the-hood improvements which are not visible, but needed to be done.

Version 2.3.1 06 August 2021

This version improves offline behaviour and fixes a few bugs. β€’ Improved Extra Features subscription handling during offline use. β€’ Map view: Make it possible to dismiss and hide error messages, such as the error message about no network. It got a bit silly in the long term when using the app offline for a longer while. Tap the error message and select "Dismiss" to make it go away! β€’ Replaced alert popup views with a new pretty popup in many places to remove a deprecated UI component. β€’ Fixed a bug where the app would crash when receiving a packet with a short destination callsign from a TNC. The Device Identification code got a bit upset about it. β€’ Messaging: Show a correct "not logged in" error in case of "bad callsign" if not logged in. An initial login is required to create and synchronise callsigns and profiles; after that messaging will still work offline as before. β€’ Tons of updates in translations: German, Icelandic, Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, Simplified Chinese. Thank you to everyone who helped! This will be the last version which supports iOS 11 - in case you have one of the two devices out there with iOS 11, please look into upgrading. Thanks!.

Version 2.3.0 13 February 2021

β€’ Custom filtering of stations shown on map, just like on the web site! β€’ Filters now work on data received from a TNC. β€’ Device identification for stations received from a TNC (excluding Mic-E packets)..

Version 2.1.2 16 November 2020

β€’ Handoff support on target information views: Open the same view on another device quickly β€’ Enable searching previously looked-up stations from iOS global search tool β€’ Fixed background audio processing in iOS 14: The DSP audio modem will keep running when app is in background. Naturally it also shows the red microphone warning about the app recording audio in background. β€’ Fixed a bug where iOS would resume audio processing when the app comes to foreground, even if TNC was disconnected previously..

Version 2.1.0 08 October 2020

β€’ Navigation! Driving directions right there in an APRS app, so there's no need to switch to another navigation app. β€’ Improvements and bug fixes in Address Search, for proper local searching. Displays more information on the found places. β€’ Touch a spot on the map for a longer while and a pin/marker will be dropped, with coordinates, address and Directions button to start navigation. β€’ Smooth scrolling of map when following your location instead of slightly jumpy scrolling! β€’ "Heading up" instead of "North up" map mode - enabled when navigation is started, or by repeatedly tapping the "center on current location" button. β€’ New languages: Catalan and Czech! β€’ Translation updates: Japanese, French, Swedish, Portuguese. β€’ Station information view again works properly in landscape mode on wedged-display devices. β€’ TNC view: Show a proper error message if Bluetooth not allowed in privacy settings..

Version 2.0.6 30 September 2020

β€’ New languages: Portuguese, Slovenian and Swedish! β€’ Lots of updates to Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Chinese (Simplified) translations. A big Thank You to everyone involved! β€’ Messaging error message strings are now available for translation..
